BEHIND THE BLOG: FEATURING "FRESH LENGTHS"

7:36:00 AM

For our next blogger interview I am featuring the amazing Lesley from "Fresh Lengths." I discovered her blog while looking for bloggers with a similar hair texture as mine. While she does hair posts, her blog is filled with so much more. You can expect to find beauty tips, reviews, and fashion posts. Check out her interview below!

1. Can you tell the readers about yourself and your blog?

My name is Lesley and I’m from London. My blog is called Fresh Lengths which is mostly about caring for and styling curly hair, beauty and a little of my personal style.

2. How did you first get into blogging?

I first started my blog after I graduated from University as I suddenly had a lot of time on my hands and I had always enjoyed writing. It originally started as a hair journal tracking my progress growing out my hair from short to long lengths (hence my blog name). Eventually it evolved into a culmination of hair, beauty and style posts.

3. How do you manage time to run your blog efficiently?

You can write anywhere and for me that was the easiest bit of managing my time. However I did find taking pictures for my blog posts required far more organisation. To get the best light for decent photos ideally I need to take photos during the day but working full time during the week doesn’t allow that and in the UK it can be pretty grey too! I’ve had to get into the habit of taking photos in batches or rely on editing so I can take pictures at night and don’t run out of content to post mid-week.

4. What are you hoping to improve with your blog this year?

I’d love to continue learning more about photography to take better pictures for my blog and I also want to learn a little more about html coding to tinker my blog design to my liking more.

5. In your opinion, what is the biggest misconception about blogging?

I think there’s a few but the biggest is probably the amount of work that goes into blogging. It’s ‘easy’ to set up a blog and write, but maintaining a blog for several years and promoting it takes a lot of work. I think a lot of people are attracted by blogging as they think it’ll lead to getting ‘free’ stuff but if that’s the motivation some will find that it may be a year or even longer before companies even see any value in your blog (or your readership). That free product is sent on the expectation of you loosely advertising it too, either through a review post or on your blog’s social media accounts. So in reality it’s not free, you are working for it by providing a tangible benefit to the brand who sent it in the first place.

6. Where would you like to see your blog 5 years from now

In the next five years I hope to be more active on YouTube and be able to create a lot more style posts. I love blogging about my personal style but I find these the most awkward posts to put together as I have a really small space and take most photos on my blog myself. I’m hoping in the next few years I’ll have that aspect of blogging more figured out.

7. What has been your biggest accomplishment and failure as a blogger?
There are a few things I’ve been proud of from blogging, though honestly I’m happiest and feel most fulfilled when someone leaves a comment saying that I helped them in some way. I think a lot of bloggers can be really hard on themselves and can see themselves as a failure when they don’t meet certain statistics - like X amount of followers, comments or ‘likes’ (myself included). I know from experience that it’s better not to beat yourself up about perceived failings. I now prefer to celebrate the achievements, however small, and continue working on where I can improve as this is far more productive.

8. Lastly, what is your biggest piece of advice for anyone starting a blog?

Just start and don’t get caught up in what everyone else is doing. It’s your unique voice and take on things which will appeal to others.

I definitely took away some tips after reading this interview! Please check out her links below and give her a follow!
